Town’s players urged to enjoy being champions

Hatters boss John Still has urged his players to go out and enjoy being champions for the final three games of the campaign.

Town head to Welling on Saturday, where they will be cheered on by 2,000 travelling fans, before hosting Forest Green Rovers on Monday and then visiting relegated Hyde on the final day.

Still knows it will be hard for the players to retain the intensity when the title was still up for grabs though as he said: “Everyone’s come back now and we’ve had a little huddle, I told them how proud they should be of themselves.

“I know whatever I say it’s going to be manic for them and I’m glad we’re playing someone who hasn’t got anything to play for as it’s really important we respect the league and the other teams.

“I hope that the talk I’ve had, they can get themselves up for the games.

“I know supporters dont care to a certain extent, they just want to celebrate, and I understand but we want to go and do the best I can.

“But for what they’ve dont, I can’t put them under pressure.

“The players have been phenomenal, they have. It’s a special time and I want them to look back and enjoy what they’ve done otherwise why do it?”

Still admitted he did have a few other goals he would like the club to achieve now that the title was secured, but they were secondary to the main aim of promotion.

He added: “I have said to them, I’d love it if we can get 100 goals, I’d love it that get 100 points, I’d love it to get the record for clean sheets, as we want one more.

“I’d love Andre Gray to be top goalscorer, I’d love Paul Benson to get 20 goals, but we’ve won the league.

“If those things follow, that’s great, but we’ve won the league, why shouldn’t they enjoy it?

“There’s no pressure on them now, they don’t have to worry about that, they can go and relax and play.”
