Town snap up Essam on loan

Hatters have announced the signing of Gillingham defender Connor Essam on a month’s loan.

The 20-year-old is a product of the Gills’ youth system and last season played 18 times for the Priestfield club.

Town boss Paul Buckle moved late on transfer deadline day to snap up Essam who has enjoyed loan spells with Bishop’s Stortford, Dartford and Dover in the Blue Square Bet South.

On his latest addition, Buckle said: “It’s safe to say we’re a bit light in the central defensive department.

“Lathaniel Rowe-Turner has done fantastic for us in that position but, with Ronnie Henry suspended, Alex Lacey’s shoulder problem and Janos Kovacs still touch and go on his recovery, I felt we needed to get some protection in that area.

“In Connor we’ve got someone who had League Two experience last season and did very well.

“He’s a proper centre-half who likes to attack the ball and, at this level, an aerial presence is vital.”

Essam was delighted to make the switch as he tweeted: “Pleased to confirm a one month loan to Luton Town! Thank you for all the welcoming messages, can’t wait to get started!”

The youngster has been handed squad number 24 and goes straight into the Hatters squad for Saturday’s game with Macclesfield Town at Kenilworth Road.
