Town season ticket sales up despite poor campaign

Season ticket sales are up on last year according to managing director Gary Sweet, writes Mark Wood.

He said: “Season ticket sales so far have been fantastic.

“Without going into numbers we are beyond where we were this point last season, so we get the positive vibe there is that people are going to stick with it next season.

“That is really terrific and we really thank everybody who has renewed so far.

“We genuinely want everybody to have that faith extended into next.

“Not just for the sake we need the cash and need money to build the football team.

“But actually the Luton support when it’s positive, and we’ve been talking an awful lot about this, let’s entertain people because if we entertain people, we get the positive vibe, the upwards spiral.

“There’s been a lot of comments this season about how much pressure there is at Luton, well let’s make sure the opposition feel the pressure rather than us feel the pressure and we do that by playing the right type of football.”

But Sweet admitted their seventh place finish in the Blue Square Bet Premier this season – their lowest since falling into the Conference – wasn’t foreseen and isn’t acceptable.

He said: “Not at all and I think supporters wouldn’t have expected that either. Everybody went into this season with huge optimism.

“Seventh is not something we would have accepted at the beginning of the season, but if you take the league table in the last couple of months it might have looked slightly different.

“We’ve got to look at that, we’ve got to recognise that the latter end of the season was probably acceptable during a period of transition, so from August onwards we will have pretty much a new team.

“New fresh legs, a fresh mindset. A few things that are going to be happening in pre-season should make sure on the 10th we’re hitting the ground running.”

Sweet though has been pleased with the way the Hatters have ended the season under new boss John Still.

He added: “Absolutely fantastic.

“It feels odd because we are not happy with the position we’ve ended up in, but we are incredibly happy with the way we’ve ended the season.

“It does feel different now, because John’s an incredibly stabilising character.

“This season, from the investors’ point of view, from my personal point of view, from anybody involved in the business it just wasn’t good enough or acceptable and we apologise for that to all supporters and thanks for sticking by us, because they’ve been fantastic.

“The support at Southport was great, the away support particularly has been magical all the way through the season despite the fact that there is a load of frustrations.

“We really genuinely appreciate all of that. But next season we really do so want to reward that level of loyalty and faith they’ve put behind us 2020 and now John Still and the players.

“We will do it (gain promotion) when we’re ready and hopefully we’ll do it next season.”
