Town ready for extra spice when Gateshead visit

TOWN’s opening day opponents Gateshead will be a real test according to assistant manager Alan Neilson, writes Mike Simmonds.

Luton played their opponents at Kenilworth Road twice last season, hammering them 5-1 in the league, with new striker Jon Shaw on target for the visitors, while they also won the FA Trophy tie 2-0 too.

Neilson said: “We played them last season a few times. We know how they play, the type of football, they try to pass and move it.”

Like Town, Gateshead have had a summer of major upheaval, with a host of players, including Shaw, leaving the Tynesiders.

Neilson said: “I think they have had a big change around and they have had lots of new players going out, while we’ve got new players too.

“We’re getting excited about it, while it has some extra spice with Jon Shaw as well.

“I spoke to the lads. They want to get rid of pre-season and get the matches in straight away, so we want to be flying by August 11.”
