Town players delighted by England C call-up

Selection for England C’s game in Albania on October 16 is a real honour for Luton left-back Greg Taylor – even if it is only a friendly, writes Mark Wood and Mike Simmonds.

Taylor, who was loaned to Tamworth last week, was one of four Hatters to be named in Paul Fairclough’s squad alongside Andre Gray, Adam Watkins, who has joined Kidderminster on loan, and new loan signing Simon Ainge.

All four were part of the squad that won 2-1 in Belgium last month as the 22-year-old said: “Being selected is an honour to play for your country.

“The last trip to Belgium was very good, I like the way the manager set out the training.

“Just being involved in the England set-up, it doesn’t really matter what game it is. I would feel as honoured as I would with any other game.

“Whether Albania or Spain, in football, you’re an international, it wouldn’t matter either way.”

Taylor is hoping time away with England C will help to freshen him up as he bids to gain match fitness.

He said: “It’s always nice to get into a different environment and with some friendly faces always makes it easier.

“You can step away from your club to play with a new bunch of lads and come back feeling energised.”

Meanwhile, Watkins was delighted to earn another cap as he continued: “It’s great to be picked, after the Belgium game I was half expecting it as I played quite well.

“I played about an hour, we played well, but I’m still delighted.

“It is always a good experience, so I’m happy to go there and hopefully we can get the job done.”

Before the selection was announced, new signing Ainge felt his move to Luton would only enhance his England chances, as he added: “I don’t think this will have done me any harm.

“If I can come in, play and do well, then hopefully I’ll get selected again.”
