Town midfielder wary of Red Dragons threat

HATTERS midfielder Keith Keane doesn’t think play-off opponents Wrexham will have any hangover from failing to lift the title, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Red Dragons finished 17 points ahead of Luton in the league campaign and travel to Kenilworth Road this evening.

He said: “We’d like to think there’s a hangover but if I was them, I’d be very confident.

“They beat everyone of the teams in the play-offs, they’ve come second clearly, so I think they’ll be very confident.

“We’ve got to pay respect to them, they should have won the league with the points they’ve got.

“They’ve been better than us this season, so you could say at this moment in time they’re the better team.

“But on our day, I think we’re good enough to beat anyone in the play-offs if we’re on our game.”

Keane admitted there was a sense of relief to actually make the play-offs this season, especially after the woeful 3-1 defeat at Braintree before new boss Paul Buckle took over.

He continued: “I don’t think there would be too many people who would have thought we could get in the play-offs.

“But I think that actually helped us because instead of thinking about the play-offs, we started actually thinking about the pride of playing for Luton.

“If anything, we weren’t doing Luton Town justice, the club, the fans, and the next game was just about putting that right.”

With Wrexham likely to bring their brand of stifling football to Luton this evening, Keane has called for players and fans alike to remain patient throughout the 90 minutes.

He said: “Fans don’t like to see it, especially at our place.

“They always see teams from minute one slowing the game down, it’s not what you want to see, you want to try and win games.

“We’ve definitely learned from it. We need to keep our emotions and don’t let them run too high, but try and play as quick as we can.”

Hatters go into the game on the back of six games without defeat and five clean sheets too as Keane added: “We’re nowhere near the finished article, but if we continue improving as we know we are, it can only help us.”
