Town look to buy Kenilworth Road

Luton Town are looking into the possibility of buying back their ancestral Kenilworth Road home from the council, writes Mark Wood.

The Hatters have called Kenilworth Road home since 1905 and managing director Gary Sweet feels buying it back and sprucing it up while looking for a new home would be a fitting gesture.

Having offered to pay the council a consideration towards rent on the ground Sweet said: “We have instigated discussions to buy back the freehold of Kenilworth Road – a proposal which we would like to think would also help the council greatly.”

The council confirmed they are in discussions, with a spokesman saying: “Luton Borough Council is the landowner of the Kenilworth Road site, and as landlords, we are in discussions with Luton Town Football Club (as tenants) about a number of issues relating to the ground.”
