Town launch McNulty appeal

The Town skipper was dismissed early in the second half after what appeared to be an innocuous aerial challenge with Sandgrounders defender Luke George.

Referee Chris Kavanagh instantly dismissed McNulty, to the amazement of the former Fleetwood defender and speaking to the press this afternoon, Still said: “We have appealed it. It’s one of those things, I didn’t see anything, no-one on our bench saw anything and in fairness to Southport, no-one on their bench saw anything either, because I asked afterwards if they’d seen the incident and they all said no.”

The Town boss has watched the footage back over the weekend and continued: “From our understanding, their guy got a knock on the back of the head which he said he’d received from the challenge from the cross, not when he’s fallen down.

“Having looked at the DVD, two of them have fallen down. It appears that the goalkeeper has got hold of Steve’s leg. I’m not saying he’s got hold of it intentionally as they’ve all gone together.

“Steve pulled his leg away, got up and ran off. The referee deemed it as dangerous play. But it’s not just me, a few of us have looked at the DVD and all come to the same conclusion.

“We don’t really see it as anything other than the player trying to get up. We’ve appealed, so let’s wait and see.”

Still is planning with and without McNulty for tomorrow night’s home clash with Salisbury City as summer signing Anthony Charles is in line for his full debut should the appeal be unsuccessful.

He added: “We’ve done some work that doesn’t include Steve, we’ve done lots of work that does include Steve.

“We had done anyway with Anthony Charles as he is a little bit fitter. In the last week or so, he’s been able to play a couple of games and came on Saturday.

“So his fitness levels should be OK. We’ve done some work with all of the centre halves. We’ll find out tomorrow, if it’s a no and it doesn’t go our way then we’ll go with Anthony.”
