Town boss John Still confirmed in last week’s News/Gazette that the club had made an offer for Drury, who scored eight times in 26 appearances for Luton before being sold to Ipswich Town for £150,000 in January 2011.

But that approach was rejected by the Red Devils, as it fell short of the amount needed to activate a release clause in Drury’s contract.

Sweet said: “We made an offer which didn’t meet their valuation and didn’t reach the apparent release clause in his contract, which was positioned as a minimum hurdle to get over.

“Sometimes, you have to accept it isn’t going to go any further at this stage unless there is a compromise on the other party’s position.”

Sweet also admitted that although Town will be competitive in the transfer market this summer, they wouldn’t be held to ransom over one player.
