Town favourites to win on the road again

The News/Gazette BetVictor column

Two cracking home performances and six points to boot has lifted Luton Town into second place in the Conference and seen them shorten to 6/4 favourites at BetVictor to win the title.

With most of the pre-season fancied sides already in the top half, the pecking order is beginning to take shape after such a frantic opening, although once again it looks a very strong division.

Early pacesetters Newport, now out to 10/1, have suffered back to back defeats on the road and slipped to third with money-bags outfit Forest Green, 5/1, now at the summit and one point clear.

We can’t see Town failing to be in the top five with odds of 1/10 now offered on that eventuality. However the race to make the five will surely see a number of twists and turns and those teams that were deemed unfancied before a ball was kicked in anger could now offer value to make a promotion surge.

One such outfit are Dartford and last seasons Conference South play-off winners have won four games on the bounce making current odds of 25/1 look tempting.

Stuart Fleetwood took his seasonal total to seven when netting against Macclesfield and although drawing a blank on Tuesday is our current 3/1 favourite to land the Golden Boot.

Aaron O’Connor is also on seven and is available at 8/1 with Mansfield hotpot Matthew Green moving ominously closer on four, a well backed 7/1 shot.

There is no let up for the Hatters with another round of fixtures this weekend despite the International programme. A two hundred mile round trip up the M1 into Derbyshire to face Alfreton is next on the agenda and with the hosts struggling down in 18th position three points are a must.

That said, The Reds did win 2-1 at Lincoln midweek but that was indicative of a rollercoaster start to their term as previous 3-0 home reverses to both Hereford and Nuneaton had seen them flirting with the drop zone.

BetVictor make Luton strong 8/11 favourites to maintain their good form with the draw 3/1 and Alfreton 4/1.

A couple of other fixtures stand out in the division this weekend. Cambridge will look to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat at Kenilworth Road when they entertain another highly-rated outfit in Wrexham; we bet 13/8 United, 7/4 The Dragons and 9/4 the draw which shows how tight we see this one.

Leaders Forest Green are sure to face an intimidating atmosphere at Blundell Park where Grimsby need to win to make sure they don’t become detached from the leading group.

Despite losing star man Liam Hearn to a long term injury Greg Pearson and Anthony Elding are useful deputies and we make the Mariners 7/5 favourites with the draw 12/5 and Green 19/10.

The Road To Rio begins Friday with England meeting Moldova in their first World Cup qualifier before entertaining Ukraine on Tuesday at Wembley and Roy Hodgson’s men are 1/3 to top the group, 3/10 to win in Moldova and 11/10 to pick up all six points from their two WC fixtures over the next week.

Ukraine are without the recently retired Andriy Shevchenko and although they deserved a draw when the two sides met in Euro 2012 they don’t travel so well and the 11/10 for two wins for the Three Lions has already attracted support.

The injuries to Andy Carroll and Wayne Rooney have muddied the waters as to who will play up front for England in the run up to Brazil 2014 and BetVictor have a book on who will score most goals for the Three Lions in their 10 WC qualifiers.

Top scorers: D Welbeck 4/1; J Defoe 5/1; W Rooney 5/1; D Sturridge 8/1; A Carroll 10/1.
