Town boss Still looks to haul in Cambridge

Hatters boss John Still has urged his side to take advantage of leaders Cambridge United’s continued inactivity in the Skrill Premier at the weekend, writes Mike Simmonds.

With the U’s hosting Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Sunday, Luton can cut the gap at the top to a single point, albeit having played two games more.

Still said: “I don’t really look too closely at the points bit, but if we can keep taking advantage of someone who isn’t playing, it’s going to strengthen our position.

“At the end of January time, we want to be able to look at it seriously then and say this is where we are and this is where we need to get. Hopefully that’s not in too terrible a state.”

Standing in Town’s way are Alfreton who themselves have enjoyed an excellent season, sitting sixth, just two points outside the play-offs.

Still continued: “It’s going to be tough Saturday, their home record is very good, but our away record is good too.

“I’m really okay with what we’ve got on front of us between now and Christmas.”

Hatters defender Lathaniel Rowe-Turner has been on loan with the Reds since September, so Still has been doing extra homework on the opposition.

He said: “We’re fully up to date with what they do and how they do it and the way they do it.

“We’re hoping tomorrow to grill him (Rowe-Turner) into being a grass, so he can tell us anything we don’t know.

“We’re fully up to date with their strengths and weaknesses as I’m sure they are ours.”

Alfreton are managed by former Chesterfield boss Nicky Law, who Still has enjoyed plenty of battles against in the past.

He continued: “I know Nicky very very well, he’s a proper football person. I’m sure he’ll be ready for the game, he won’t leave anything to chance.

“I get on really, really well with him, but he won’t like me Saturday and I probably won’t like him.

“When it’s all, I’m over sure we’ll be friends again.”

Town go into the game on the back of a 13 game unbeaten run in the Conference, but despite the sequence, Still is more than aware they have achieved nothing yet.

The boss addded: “It’s been remarkable, the lads have done fantastic, they really have.

“But it’s no good doing fantastic for a quarter, or a third, or a half, or three quarters.

“We’re fully aware, I make them fully aware that sometimes it might not go right for us and it’s how you respond to disappointment.”
