Town being cut adrift in title race

Hatters fell 14 points behind leaders Grimsby Town and six points away from the play-off places after being held by Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The Mariners edged past AFC Telford 1-0, while Hatters remained seventh after the majority of results went against them.

Wrexham beat Stockport 3-1, while Kidderminster defeated Cambridge 3-2 and Mansfield hammered Barrow, last week’s conquerors of Luton, 8-1.

Newport’s home draw with Tamworth was one bright point for Hatters but boss Paul Buckle was remaining positive as he said: “I’m looking at the next game. We have got three games in hand on a few clubs and we’ve got to win them.

“We know what we’ve got to do. It’s in our own hands, we’ve got to win those games and I thought on reflection we deserved to win (on Saturday).

“Sometimes you can play poorly and nick it but we played very well and only got a point for our troubles. If we play like that and we show that commitment and desire, we’re not going to be too far away.”
