Thomas urges Town fans to rally behind their side

Hatters defender Wayne Thomas has urged Town’s fans to stick with their side despite the club’s poor run of form, writes Mike Simmonds.

Luton travel to Macclesfield this evening and are 14 points adrift of leaders Grimsby, while they have fallen an alarming nine points behind fifth-placed Kidderminster Harriers too.

Thomas insists that the club’s supporters can play a huge role in their chase for the title as he said: “There is no point in saying you can’t reach top spot, because then you’re setting the message.

“You’ve got to aim as high as you can. It’s not just a case of having 6,000 fans here creating a great atmosphere because away teams are going to come and think great, 6,000 fans, it’s their cup final.

“The fans can play a massive part, they can make it very uncomfortable and very difficult for the opposition to come here and play,

“They need to get behind the lads so that the players are under no pressure playing at home or away.

“It’s important that the fans realise how big a part they can play. They can have an adverse affect if they start moaning, which obviously they’re entitled to because the fans are going to be here after the players and staff have left, as it’s their club.

“They’re entitled to their opinions, but what want to do is the best we can can do.

“Any player doesn’t intend to step over that white line and not give 110 per cent, but that little bit of negativity can filter down through the football club. It can come through everybody and make it’s way through to the players, which can make it very difficult.”

Thomas has been at Luton for a fortnight now and is settling in well despite not being able to kick a ball due to a strike in Greece stopping his clearance going through.

He is available for the visit to the Silkmen this evening though as he added: “It’s been brilliant. “There’s a great bunch of lads here and are very good on paper.

“Just because past of the past exploits at Luton doesn’t mean the current squad can turn up to Dartford away and win though. We’ve got to earn those points and it’s very difficult in this league, so we’ve just got to roll our sleeves up now.”
