The 23-year-old has been in and out of favour this year, and a mistake in the 1-0 defeat at Barrow led to him being dropped.

Former manager Paul Buckle was particularly scathing and the defender said: “I understand it was the wrong thing and I should have done better, but the manager reacted how he feels is correct and I can’t argue with that.

“Football’s a strange game, one moment you can go from your highest point and next you can be at your lowest, so I’m just trying to maintain a middle ground and hopefully it will be a good season.”

Town’s fans had voiced their displeasure at Taylor being singled out and the defender appreciated their support.

He said: “The fans have always been good to me here. I appreciate the support they’ve given me.

“It’s definitely a help when you make a mistake like that and they’re backing you to the full.

Taylor, who is out of contract in the summer, was back in the starting 11 as Luton were knocked out of the FA Cup on Saturday and has set his sights on winning promotion.

He added: “That was the whole reason why I signed here. I want to be part of the team that goes up in history as the team that put them back in the Football League.”
