Still warns Guttridge against any more silly bookings as he praises midfield duo

The 31-year-old summer signing from Northampton Town is just one booking away from a ban after picking up another silly yellow card in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Dartford.

Still said: “He mustn’t get booked, not for one or two of the things he’s been booked, he doesn’t need to get booked for. He needs to address that.”

But he was full of praise for Guttridge who has been Luton’s star performer this season with a string of fine performances.

He’s also the Hatters’ leading scorer with three goals so far this season as he’s regularly played in behind a lone striker.

Still said: “He’s a very clever player and I think it’s an ideal place for him to play.

“He gets lots of the ball, he’s clever with the ball, his movement with the ball is good, and I’ve been really, really pleased with that.

“And I think if he continues to find those kind of spaces he will continue to cause problems.

“Luke Guttridge had about four or five or six shots maybe in the last couple of home games and not hit the target.

“But he’s going to hit the target, he hit the target the other night, albeit a deflection, he’s hit the target and we’ve got a goal from it.

“I do think that we’ve got goals in us, but we have to provide the opportunities for people to score.”

And Still admitted he shouldn’t have changed Guttridge’s role when they lost 2-0 at Wrexham last week as he’s been linking so well with on-loan strike Paul Benson.

He continued: “I’ve been really pleased with that, and when we played up at Wrexham and I didn’t play him in that position the manager made a mistake.

“I felt it was the right thing for the team and it wasn’t. So he was back there the other night and he did very well.”

The return of influential midfielder Alex Lawless was also a key factor in Luton’s much-improved showing on Tuesday night and Still was delighted to have him back.

He added: “When you’ve had established players, whoever they are out of the team, it’s always good when they come back.

“With the greatest of respect not just Alex, if we’d lost Steve McNulty, Ronnie Henry didn’t start and had a little bit of a break.

“And when established players come back I think it gives everyone a lift, because by and large established players know the job and he came back and he made an impact.

“What you worry about sometimes is that it might take him two or three or four games to get to back to what is good.

“The first game can sometimes be adrenaline that pulls you through, so he might not be as effective this week, I’m being honest.

“It’s always good to have established players back in contention, 100 per cent.”
