Still: Town have set the bar now with Stockport victory

Hatters boss John Still believes Town have set the bar for their performances under his charge as they beat Stockport County 1-0 yesterday, writes Mike Simmonds.

Jake Howells’ goal on the stroke of half time gave Still a winning start to his Luton career, and ended a seven game winless streak that had seen Town fail to record a victory in the whole of February.

Still said: “I don’t know what we can do between now and the end of the season, but if that’s the level of performance between now and then, I’ll be pleased.

“Will it be? I don’t know. There’s an enormous amount of work to be done, so much work to do on organisation. It’s small steps, I’ve been here four days, four steps and gradually everyone will understand what’s required.

“We put a little bit of structure in to what we want to do. We want to use the advantage of the pace of the front people,

“We had a chance to score a penalty and had two or three other opportunities without giving the opposition too many.

“I was really pleased with the way we didn’t go chasing the ball when they kept it at the back. We kept our shape and there was little bit of determination about our play, so for me, for the first game I was very, very pleased.”

Still also took the unusual step of staying in his dugout on the half time whistle addressing his coaching staff before heading into the dressing room.

He said: “I never going straight in the dressing room, I let the players have some time to themselves. I speak to my staff, because I don’t see everything.

“I decide what I’m going to say and what we need to do, but you’ll never see me go straight in the dressing room at half time.”

Still also praised the 372 amount of Town fans who made the trip to Edgeley Park as he added: “They are very, very loyal supporters. Every credit to them for coming to support their team and getting behind their time.

“Sometimes they will get disappointed, we just hope we can make them happy more than sad.

“If we can do that, we’re quite prepared to take a pat on the back and a punch on the nose. You can’t take one without the other, that’s life, but we hope to give them good times.”
