Still thrilled as Franks chooses Luton

Shrewd Hatters triggered a release clause in Fraser Franks’ contract this week to net the centre-half from Skrill Premier rivals Welling United for an undisclosed fee, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town were one of two clubs to activate the clause, but it was Luton who did enough to win the battle for the 23-year-old defender who returns to full-time football.

Town boss John Still said: “When we got the green light we could do it, we moved and did it as quickly as we could.

“There were other teams in the frame which makes it even better.”

On why he went for Franks, who has captained England C this term, Still continued: “I’ve known him for a while, when he was at Wimbledon and I’ve always liked him.”

Meanwhile, Wings boss Jamie Day was disappointed to lose Franks, who was a mainstay of his defence.

He admitted: “Fraser was an important member of our squad.

“He has always shown a great attitude in games and training, and deserves to move back into full-time football.”
