Still thrilled as Oak Road opens for Town fans

Hatters boss John Still is relishing the Oak Road being open again for home fans during Saturday’s Skrill Premier clash with Gateshead, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town have a 100 per cent record previously with their supporters at both ends of the ground, a 4-1 win over Hyde and 3-0 triumph against Southport, as Still believes it does have a positive factor.

He said: “It does, absolutely.

“Does it make a difference to results? No-one knows, it’s difficult to say.

“But I think that for all of us, knowing the support is all around you and when you’re attacking one goal you’re being called complimentary names and not abusive names, also when you’re trying to take a corner.

“I think it does give players a lift, absolutely I do.”

On the test ahead of Town, against a Gateshead side, who have climbed up the table in recent weeks and are now in contention for a play-off place, Still continued: “They’re in line with the better teams at the moment, their form is good.

“For that reason we understand it’s going to be tough, but you know all these games when they are particularly tough, they’re just other challenges for people.

“The same way for the team against Staines and Wrexham, playing against better players, individually better players, better organisation, sometimes to improve yourself you have to overcome challenges.

“If things stop becoming challenging, most times you stop improving yourself because the challenge has gone out of it.

“You get complacent and when you get complacent you start getting beat.

“Part and parcel of everything we do is another challenge, so I look forward to Saturday and another challenge.”

The Town boss is also hopeful of better conditions than the clash at Heed recently which saw the game played in monsoon-like weather and run the risk of being called off at one stage.

He added: “It was as bad rain and wind as I’ve ever experienced.

“Credit to both sides for getting the game done and competing as well as both teams did.

“Hopefully it will be better conditions, produce a better quality game, and that our performance can be to the level thats its been and we can try and leave the points here.”
