Still thinks Town have been ‘reinvented’ since he took over

Hatters boss John Still believes the club has already been reinvented during his tenure, writes Mike Simmonds.

The former Dagenham manager took over at Kenilworth Road a year ago on Wednesday and has seen his side power to the summit of the Skrill Premier.

Still explained how he and his staff had gone about changing the club around, saying: “If you look at the Kidderminster game and Hereford game where we scored lots of goals in the second half, would that have happened, pre me or when I first came?

“I’m not saying it wouldn’t, but I don’t know. The crowd just stayed with us and we scored goals for fun in the second half.

“I think we’ve reinvented this football club a bit, I really do. That’s not just me, it’s players, supporters, staff.

“We’ve all worked to try and get that team ethic and I think that’s what we’ve done.

“That coupled with good performances, but not necessarily going three or 4-0 up in the first half, it might be 1-0 at half time or 0-0.

“I remember as far back as Lincoln and Halifax when we were behind and the support was fantastic. It pulled us through in those games, I’m telling you, it absolutely did.

“The whole situation we find ourselves in is better than the situation that was when we came.”

Getting the fans back onside was something that was at the forefront of Still’s mind when he was appointed as it was a very different story last term under former boss Paul Buckle.

He continued: “It was something I knew somewhere along the line we might want to address, I understood that, that was part of the challenge when I came here.”

The boss did experience some abuse from supporters in the early days of his rein, with a home defeat to Hyde in particular sticking in his memory.

The criticism only acted to drive him on though as he added: “I remember coming off the pitch after the game against Hyde and it was just another spur.

“I was just trying to find out who could do what I wanted and who couldn’t.

“We finished the season reasonably decently and I was getting it into people a little bit.

“I started to play with a man off the centre forward in Alex Lawless and could see that was something that could work.

“I wasn’t sure when the season ended about the complete make up of the midfield, but I knew gradually I could make that midfield work.

“Although we lost Jon Shaw, I brought Paul Benson in to add a focal point to our attacks.

“I knew I could get it going and touch wood thats how it’s gone.”

Still did joke though that after first watching his new charges from the stands during the 2-0 defeat at Braintree, he had considered changing his mind.

The boss added: “When we went to Braintree and were sat in the stands after already doing the deal to come here, and I said to Terry (Harris), ring up Dagenham and tell them we’re coming back!

“But if ever there was a right time to come, that was the right time to come, because I looked at the game and it looked like a football team that was at its lowest.

“That’s a decent place to start and when we drove home that night, I was genuinely excited, I really, really was.”
