Still to taking things slowly as he prepares for Nuneaton clash

The former Dagenham & Redbridge manager saw his side win 1-0 at Stockport County at the weekend, but admitted playing Saturday/Tuesday until virtually the end of the season is making it harder to implement his ideas.

Speaking to the press today, he said: “It’s impossible to prepare properly. What you need is a full week of training times two or three to get your ideas over.

“I had one session with the boys last week, one session with them now to prepare for the next one.

“Then I’ll have two sessions with them Thursday and Friday for next Saturday. You have to be careful you don’t give them too much information too quickly otherwise you get mixed messages.

“I’m really focusing on one thing in training at the moment, working on one thing, not working on anything else.

“Gradually I’ll introduce different things, but it’s so difficult to get all of your ideas over when you’ve not got them for a complete week where you can tag things on.

“I’m going to short circuit a few things to try and have the best opportunity, but this is a project that needs building and I won’t deviate from building that.”

On the test Nuneaton, who occupy the last relegation spot, will provide, Still continued: “In terms of match reports, I have a knowledge from the staff that are here.

“It’s important we know as much about them, but let them also be looking at what we do.

“Teams are all hard now, the days of easy games at any level are gone. I watched a little bit of Man United and Norwich and although they won 4-0, at 1-0 it wasn’t easy.

“Whoever we play, by and large, is really, really tough.”

Although Town looked far more organised than they had done in recent weeks at Stockport on Saturday, Still was well aware, there was still plenty more work to be done.

He said: “It was a very pleasing way to start, but as disappointing as the game was in terms of the result at Braintree, and as pleased as I was at the performance I saw there (Stockport), I take them both the same at the moment.

“As far as I’m concerned, we’ve done okay but it’s a million miles away from where I want to be.”

The boss also hinted that new signing Alex Wall may be on the bench after watching on from the stands at Edgeley Park.

He said “It was unfair on him. He may have coped with it well, but it was hard to throw him into something until he is settled.

“He’s been in today and we might put him on the bench tomorrow.”
