Still and assistant Terry Harris had gone to watch Crawley Town’s clash with Tranmere Rovers in League One, when news started to filter through that Cambridge were being beaten 2-0 at Kidderminster Harriers.

Harford was also in attendance along with a number of other manager’s as Still said: “I went with Terry (Harris) to watch Crawley versus Tranmere on Tuesday, and thought when it’s over probably someone will ring me.

“With however long to go it was, someone sort of grabbed me around the back of the neck and went ‘I’m off, congratulations, you’re up, Cambridge are 2-0 down.’

“I looked round and it was Mick Harford, who’s a good pal of mine. He said ‘I’ve been on the blower to someone I know is there, they’re 2-0 down there’s only a little while to go congratulations.’

“From that minute, where we were, Peter Taylor (Gillingham manager) was next to me, Phil Parkinson (Bradford City manager) and people just kept turning round and saying well done.

“So that was a bit crazy, as the game ended, managers and scouts we know were coming up and saying the same.

“Then me and Terry got in the car home and the phone was just manic, it’s been crazy, crazy. I spoke to Gary Sweet (managing director), so went to my daughters as my wife was there, they all knew and they were all up and lively.

“But I didn’t have a drink there, went home and went to bed at about 2 o’clock, up at 4 as I was still really hyper.

“Wednesday was another manic day, but I’ve tried to come to terms with it, as it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Still admitted he hasn’t really had a chance to celebrate the club’s achievements yet, but will do so properly once the campaign is over.

He added: “The celebration bits are probably going to be around the football. My family are all coming on Monday (against Forest Green), we’ll enjoy that.

“We’ve got the club sponsored dinner, that will be a great event, I’ll enjoy all that, but I’ll enjoy it when the break comes when I can go and put my feet up.”
