Still not getting carried away by Town’s upturn in form

Hatters boss John Still was refusing to get carried away by his side’s recent winning streak ahead of today’s Skrill Premier clash at Hereford, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town go to Edgar Street on the back of three straight wins, including a thumping 4-0 victory over Woking on Tuesday night.

Still said: “I think you’ve got to treat the highs and the lows as imposters because you never know when they’re going to change.

“I’ve always had that philosophy. I’m delighted when we win, but once that’s over, I never stay there, I come back down to reality and reality is hard work and preparation.

“They’re the things to do and the time to celebrate is when the season is over and you’ve won something, not 10 games in.”

Town’s early season form had been indifferent, but when asked if he felt Hatters had turned the corner now with their recent results, Still continued: “I didn’t really think there was much of a corner to change as I was happy with how we were playing.

“I look at the sason and it’s 11 games. We were poor first game of the season, and we were poor against Wrexham, we were adequate against Macclesfield, but not good.

“I’d been pleased with all the others though and if there’s a team in any league, that can expect to be at it’s best consistently scoring when at the moment for arguments sake, weve got no Paul Benson, no Jon Shaw, no Alex Wall, and had basically a central midfielder (Andy Parry) playing centre half, then I’ve been delighted as we’ve dug in and done well.

“I’m just looking forward to when there’s people who are all fit and challenging for places.

“It’s not like I was sitting there biting my finger nails thinking what can we do next? So I didn’t look at corners to turn being honest.”

On the test that the Bulls will possess this afternoon, Still added: “Whoever you play, they’re tough. If they’re ex-Football League clubs, there’s normally an expectation attached to them, whoever you are and that makes it a tough game.

“Tuesday night, we go away from home and you’ve got to earn the right to play, so we dug in for 20 minutes.

“Macca (Steve McNulty) who I don’t think has made a mistake all season, made an error and our goalkeeper has made a save, so the first 20 minute was tough.

“But once we got the competing side right, we were able to use a bit of extra quality.

“But you’ve got to do that before you can use that extra bit of quality.

“No doubt it’s going to be a really, really tough game against an ex-Football League side that will have an expectation.

“But we’re playing 11 people, same as next week and same as last week and we’ve got to be better than them.”
