Still not fussed about changing a winning team

Hatters boss John Still would no qualms about changing a winning side for tomorrow’s Skrill Premier trip to Hereford United, writes Mike Simmonds.

Tuesday night’s 4-0 win at Woking was Town’s third in a row, lifting Luton up to fifth in the table, but both Paul Benson and Alex Lawless could well be fit to return at Edgar Street on Saturday.

When asked it if would be difficult to change his side, Still said: “No, no it’s easy, I just think what I think the team is to win the game.

“If a team is playing well and blasting goals and not conceding you look at that, but I don’t think that’s a tough decision, just pick what you think is the right team for that day.

“Systems are different and when people say on Wednesday you’re going to have a selection problem now, I’ve never had a selection problem in my life.

“I look at what we’ve got, what’s the best team, that’s the team we’ll have today.

“So I never really worry about what’s gone before, it’s what’s coming up that’s important.”

Still has been delighted with the upturn in form of forward Mark Cullen, who has now notched four goals in his last two games, one away from his entire tally last year, during 29 games for both Bury and Stockport County.

The boss continued: “It’s like when I say about people being patient with those who have come in, give them a chance.

“He came in at the start of the season, he wasn’t perhaps firing on all cyliders.

“Was that because he was missing chances? I can’t remember him missing any. Were we creating chances? That can be the key, and sometimes people say he’s not scoring, but are we giving them an opportunity to score?

“He’s done very well though. I think he’s a good player, not just someone who can score a goal. It’s good to see him scoring, but it’s good to see him contributing to the team performance as well.”

Three of Cullen’s four strikes have come from crosses into the box, something Still had been highly critical earlier in the campaign.

He added: “It’s been getting better, it has been getting better. Cully’s first goal against Lincoln, Gutts (Luke Guttridge) has put in a great little dink in there, later on before we scored our winning goal, Andre (Gray) dinked a great cross over to Cully.

“It’s been improving, but we’ve done so much work with crossing. It doesn’t always mean it’s going to be good, but you’d like to think it’s going to be better.

“It’s repetition, repetition, repetition, until you’re bored doing it and then you do it again.

“I was only here for a bit of last year, so I don’t know everything about the players. Were we a crossing team? Some teams are not crossing teams, but I like to cross and I think we’ve got players who can score from crosses.

“It has really been hard work, but that’s not going to say we’re not going to pass it in as well, you need a mix of your game and we’ve worked as hard we can on trying to provide quality crosses.”
