Still not fussed about beating Cambridge

Hatters boss John Still has insisted that beating Cambridge United this evening is of little consequence to him, as long as Town are crowned Skrill Premier champions at the end of the season, writes Mike Simmonds.

Luton could move 18 points clear of their nearest rivals with victory at the Abbey this evening, but on the importance of the clash, Still said: “All I want to do is win the league, whether I beat Cambridge or don’t beat Cambridge is of little interest to me.

“In the whole scheme of things, beating Cambridge isn’t the biggest thing of the year, winning promotion is the biggest thing of the year.

“My focus has to be on doing that job. How many Cambridge supporters will be desperate to beat Luton? But do they want to beat Luton or do they want to win the league?

“I guess they would say, I wouldnt mind if we lost to Luton if we win the league.

“My outlook is purely and simply getting promoted at the end of the season. If we do that and beat Cambridge on the way that’s great, if we don’t and win the league, that’s still great.

“Maybe they think it’s a big game, but we play big games every week.

“Other people will look at we’re first and they’re second and it having the appearance of a big game, but it’s three points at stake.

“If we were at Tamworth or Barnet, it’s three points. I say every week, when you’re trying to achieve something, whoever you are, at this stage of the season, all games are big games and tough games.

“Some people look at it as a big game, me myself, I look at it as no bigger than last week and no bigger than next, it’s just an important game.”

Still did conceded though that the U’s needed victory more than his team, with defeat for Cambridge virtually signalling their already faint title hopes.

He continued: “It will be fantastic if we can go there and do that (win) and I dare say Cambridge would be saying the same.

“For them, they would probably look at it and say, they really need to perhaps win it to give themsevles the best opportunity of winning the league because of the amount of games that are left.

“They could get beat and win their next 10, it’s football. I’ve always been the same, I never look too close at anything, never rely on anything until it’s over, when its over then we’ll know.

“Their prospective is probably different to our perspective. We’re just looking to go there and put in the level of performance we’ve been doing for 20 odd games now and hopefully we can do that.”

United boss Richard Money has bemoaned his side’s progress in the FA Trophy which has seen them drop 15 points behind Luton before tonight’s contest.

But Still didn’t believe that reaching the final has hindered their chance as he added: “No I don’t think so at all. I think success breeds success myself, I really do.

“I’m not a believer that in this stage of the season playing Saturday, Tuesday is a negative thing, it’s a positive thing sometimes.

“At this stage of the season, players are normally fit, so the amount of training you do, sometimes you train to train.

“Saturday, Tuesday can be a good things, I can’t speak for them, but I don’t think it’s been a negative thing.”
