Still not fazed by defeat at Boreham Wood

Level-headed Hatters boss John Still was pleased with his side’s opening pre-season workout, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat at Conference South side Boreham Wood on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

Town’s stars looked in good shape following their week-long training trip to Portugal, even if they did lack a certain degree of sharpness in front of goal.

Still said: “You can get carried away sometimes with how you play pre-season, good and bad.

“And I’m too old and hopefully too knowledgeable to sort of worry about how good it looks in training and how poor it looks in training, how good it looks in pre-season and how poor it can look in pre-season.

“I think that I know where we are and I think that I know where we need to get to and I’m delighted with where we are at this moment.”

With temperatures topping 30C it was nothing Town weren’t used to following their week on the Iberian peninsula, as Still said: “We’re used to that so that wasn’t a problem.

“It was a very good work out. I think it rounds off a good week for us.

“It was good to get the ball’s out, we’ve done a little bit with balls to be fair, which we’re a bit further in front than I thought we’d be in that respect.

“But the main point of the week was to get everyone fit, which we feel we have done. A couple of little knocks and that, but nothing terrible.

“Alex Lawless is making good progress, so at the end of that sort of first crack at it I’ve been very pleased with that.”
