Still left frustrated by postponements

Town chief John Still was disappointed to see Saturday’s home game with Tamworth called off on the morning of the match, writes Mark Wood.

He said: “It was crazy really because I knew there was an inspection. I got up in the morning and from where I live to Luton is an hour away.

“It was a bit blowy but I thought it was all right. As I left my house and started to make my way over we had about a 40-minute downpour and I thought if we have this at Luton we haven’t got any chance because it absolutely stormed.

“I understand it was almost the storm we got here and it threw everything out. As I said, the day started promising, but I think they just did that to fool us!”

Instead the Hatters had to hit the training pitch to keep busy, while games involving potential transfer targets were also postponed.

“We trained on Saturday,” revealed Still. “We reported for the game as normal, we knew it was off in the morning, but the players came in and we went to the training ground and trained.

“What else can you do? If we had been away and we’d travelled, it’s hard to train, but because you are at home you can train.

“There were games we would have liked to have watched, but they were off.

“So in the end, me Terry (Harris) and Hakan (Hayrettin) we trained with the players. What can you do?”

But with footballers being creatures of habit, Still admitted they had missed their Saturday fix at the weekend.

He said: “I think everything we do is with an intensity anyway. We train with an intensity, but I think you can’t get over the mental side of it with players.

“Like I said last week, if you don’t play on a Tuesday or a Wednesday or a Monday, I think by and large players are not too bad.

“But players want to play on a Saturday and I think the level of training that you’ll get won’t be as intense as a normal training session because there’s that little bit of disappointment attached to it.

“But as long as you tick over, as long as you keep going, I think it’s OK.”

Having now seen a number of games called off this season, Still is unconcerned by the growing fixture congestion.

“I’m not worried about that at all,” he added. “We’re fit, we’re strong and if we have to play Saturday/Tuesday we’ll be ready to play Saturday/Tuesday.

“If we’ve got to play Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, then we’ll have to be ready for that because that’s what it is.

“I’m not going to waste my energy worrying about things that we can’t influence. We can only influence what’s in front of us and that’s what we’ll do.”
