Still labels FA proposal as ‘insulting’

Craig Mackail-Smith was spotted by boss John Still when manager at Dagenham & Redbridge

FA chairman Greg Dyke set out the controversial proposal earlier this month, in an effort to boost the progression of young English players.

But Still said: “I think it’s very insulting.

“Who gives someone the right to say we’ve got to develop the elite of this country above developing every other player?

“They’re talking about developing people to play for England and we all want that, absolutely, 100 per cent.

“But what about players that have come from non-league level and lower league level that have gone on and played for their country?

“Craig Mackail-Smith (Scotland) being one of mine, Warren Barton (England) being one of mine, they’ve come out of non-league and gone on to play for their country.”

Still also questioned what the lower league teams would gain from the proposals too, citing Town’s 7-0 demolition of an Arsenal XI in pre-season.
