Still: It was an eerie feeling watching at Braintree

After being appointed on the afternoon of the game, Still opted not to take his place in the dugout but viewed from the stands, where he witnessed quite possibly Town’s worst performance of the season.

He said: “We didn’t play very well did we and it was a really eerie feeling because I felt like a supporter.

“I was sitting there, not in the directors box and I couldn’t tell people where to go and what to do. I think it’s fair to say that the team didn’t play very well, it’s also fair to say and this isn’t a criticism of Braintree, I didn’t think it was a very good game.

“They didn’t particularly look like scoring, but they scored a couple and we didn’t look like scoring, had a decent chance at 2-0, but it was almost a game of no incident.

“I have to say you don’t get that many good games at Braintree which isn’t a criticism either. The pitch is a bit difficult for both teams, they’re always tough, hard, enduring games, and if I’d said to the players how do you think they did, they’d say not very well.”

With spirits currently at an almost all-time low since Town have been in the Conference, Still is well aware there is no quick fix to it returning.

He continued: “When confidence is low, there are two ways of getting over that. One is to stay focused, do your job, work hard and if you’re good players, it will come right.

“The other way is there’s this fella that walks around with a magic wand and touches you and you’re all better, but I’m sill waiting for him, I haven’t seen him ever.”

Despite the shocking performance at Braintree, Still thinks the current squad has the ability to turn things around as he said: “If you put the game to one side, we’ve got some talented players and I don’t know if they’ve over performed or under performed because that’s not been my job.

“At the moment it’s not going very well for them and I’ve joined a club that’s at a bit of a low.

“It’s a great time for me to join because things are low. Any job is tough though, if I wanted it not tough, I’d have probably stayed at Dagenham.

“I’ve probably seen the worst of Luton, so I’ll say go and play, show me what you can do.

“If you have a bad game, I’m not going to say you’re a bad player. Whatever you’ve done here before, good or bad, I’ve not seen, so I’m only going on what people tell me.

“But the transfer window is closed, we can’t do anything, we can’t sell you so relax and go out and do your thing thing.”

Still took training for the first time today, with a double session at the Ely Way and admitted his excitement about finally getting to work with the players.

He added: “I wanted a challenge, I knew that I wanted a challenge. It was the right club, at the right time and right place.

“I’m 62-years-old now and I didn’t sleep last night because I was excited, genuinely excited.

“I’m ready for the highs and the lows, because there’s going to be. I won’t get too high with the highs and low with the lows.”
