Still is so cross at fortunate Hatters as he demands players to play with a smile

Disappointed Hatters boss John Still admitted his side were fortunate to claim a late draw against Macclesfield Town at the weekend, writes Mark Wood.

He believed his side deserved a goal though, saying: “Overall, I think we could say we were a touch fortunate to get something from the game.

“I don’t think we were a touch fortunate to score, because I thought we had three or four good efforts. Andre (Gray) hit the post, we had a couple off the line.

“I don’t think we were fortunate to score, but I think we were a bit fortunate to get a result so late in the game, I do.”

He was disappointed by his side’s performance though, especially their inability to get crosses in, as he continued: “That was another disappointing aspect that we started to refuse crosses and our biggest problem that we gave them were from crosses.

“And we just started to refuse crosses but we got the cross in from deep over the far side and I think we got half a touch on it and I think he’s (Luke Guttridge) followed it in and finished.

“When I say about disappointing aspects, I’ll be honest, there’s load of them, there’s loads of disappointing aspects. But in the final third, trying to find the way to cross is vital and I felt we refused a few crosses. Because some of the balls we did put in almost led to goals and lots of goals come from crosses. You shouldn’t refuse a cross and I felt we did refuse a few today and fortunately we got a goal from one.

The crowd voiced their disapproval at times, but Still called on his players to meet their massive expectations with a smile, adding: “You know what, if I’m watching the team that I support and it isn’t playing well I’m going to be disappointed and unhappy.

“But the players have to learn to deal with that, it’s just part and parcel of it, so there isn’t a shortcut to it. I get up every morning and can’t wait to get to work, can’t wait to go training, can’t wait for the games to come because I just love what I do and the players have got to love what they do.

“I’m trying really as hard as I can do to say to the players that when they go out, you’ve got to come out with a smile on your face. Don’t play unhappy. If the crowd get on your back you’ve just got to deal with that. If you play with a smile on your face you’re going to play better.”
