Still hails his record breaking Hatters

Hatters boss John Still saw the records tumble as Town rounded off their Skrill Premier title winning campaign with a 1-0 win at bottom side Hyde yesterday.

The result meant Luton broke the 100 point barrier, while their 23rd clean sheet was a club record with Andre Gray finishing as the division’s top scorer.

Hatters had already reached their 100 goal mark during the victory over Forest Green last week as Still said: “It was was probably a game too far, but you know what’s pleased me is we’ve won it, kept a clean sheet, got over 100 goals, over 100 points.

“I think it’s the biggest gap ever between first and second (Cambridge United) in the competition, Andre Gray’s the leading goalscorer, so it doesn’t get any better than that.

“This was a tough one. Quite rightly, the boys were celebrating for a few days, of course they have and when I saw some of the results, Leicester got beat 4-1 (after winning promotion) and we’ve just carried on winning.

“You can look at a game or look at a season, I’m going to look at the season and it’s been unbelievable, I couldn’t have dreamt it would be this good.”

On the campaign, Still continued: “We’ve just got better and better and better.

“The most pleasing thing, to win a league, you’ve got to win in all times and all conditions.

“You’ve got to win when you’re not at your best, you’ve got to play good football and we’ve played great football this year.

“You’ve got to score goals, we’ve scored loads of goals, got to concede not too many, so the season has been remarkable if I’m honest.

“There are times I’ve won it before, but this has been the most remarkable season.”

Still made two changes to the team with both Ronnie Henry and Fraser Franks missing out, as Alex Lacey and Andy Parry came in, while long-term absentee Jonathan Smith was named on the bench and made it on for the final moments.

The boss continued: “Ronnie had a bit of a knock, so did Parry really, but we thought we’d take the chance.

“Pelly (Ruddock Mpanzu) was touch and go, but thought we’d take the chance too, while Andre, because we wanted him to get the top goalscorer, we took a chance with it.

“Jonathan Smith, it was the right day for the right reasons and I’m pleased it worked out for us.”

Although most fans expected Town to run up a cricket score against the relegated Tigers who had only won once all season, drawing another seven, Still knew it wasn’t going to be that way.

He continued: “It’s funny, we had the report from their game at Grimsby, they shouldn’t have got beat.

“They played us at home and I thought they were a decent team, I think that’s the story of their life.

“They play great football, concede soft goals and don’t get enough goals themselves.

“Some people turn round and say that was your ideal last game of the season, I’m not sure it was because there’s an expectation attached to it, but fortunately we handled the expectations and won the game. It’s 101 points, it’s incredible.”
