Still hails Hatters’ form as he enjoys best ever start to a season

Delighted Town chief John Still has admitted that Luton’s start to the season is probably as good as any he has had during his long managerial career, writes Mark Wood.

The Hatters are the Skrill Premier’s top scorers with 47 goals in 23 games and currently sit just one point behind leaders Cambridge United on 47 points, having lost just three games in all competitions this season.

Still said: “This is probably as good as I can remember it. I’m sure somewhere along the line we’ve had great runs and that, but I’m not really a big one for remembering that.

“I remember lots of things, but all situations are different. This is a different situation and I think we’ve gradually got into this mode.

“The pleasing with it is that some of the victories are against sides that have been in good form, like Alfreton who have been in particularly good form at home.

“I think that Gateshead were probably up there amongst the top of the form guide. I think their away form has been particularly good.

“So when you look at that we obviously have to be pleased with the performances.”

The Hatters are currently on a run of 15 league games unbeaten and have won their last nine home games in a row.

Still hailed their current form, saying: “It’s very good. Interestingly I read something the other day about it, and it said something about our poor start, well I thought to myself we’ve only lost two (league) games so I’m trying to find where the poor bit is.

“We started all right, but as I said at the time, let’s get going, let’s get into it, let’s get the games and players used to everything and once we’ve done that I think our form’s been really, really good.

“We’ve been consistent and that’s the key you know. The form has been consistent.

“We’ve got into a mode of being comfortable about scoring goals. I know we conceded two Saturday, but comfortable really not conceding too many goals.

“So as I say, at the moment we’ve all got to be happy with what we’re doing.”

The outlook at Kenilworth Road is now very different to when Still took the reins in February with Luton rudderless following the departure of former boss Paul Buckle for personal reasons.

And Still admitted that his squad have responded to his leadership even better than he could have expected.

He added: “Possibly. When you come into a club, I have a way of doing it and sometimes it just doesn’t quite take off and you have to go back and just keep adding to it and that.

“It’s gone as well as I would have hoped to be honest, because what I find the way I do it I can’t shortcut it. You’ve got to go through the same procedure and sometimes part of it is slow.

“It’s a bit slower, you’ve got to try to do it and wait a bit and it’s almost there and you’ve got to wait a bit...

“And other times you do it and it’s gone quite nicely, so the building of it has gone quite nicely.

“But that’s not to say around the corner there’s going to be something that might hold us up a bit and stop us going again.

“There’s lots of things to take into account with that, but at the moment it couldn’t really have probably been better than it is.

“It’s probably as good as I could have hoped it would be.”
