Still delighted with Hatters’ winning mentality

Installing a winning mentality throughout the club is vital for Town boss John Still, writes Mike Simmonds.

With the first team on a 10 game unbeaten run, the Hatters chief saw his development squad make it nine wins from 10 matches this season after beating West Ham United on Tuesday evening.

Luton’s youth team are also in fine form, as they reached the FA Youth Cup second round with a confident 4-0 triumph at Boston United on Monday.

It all bodes well according to Still as he said: “The only team at a football club that has to win is the first team.

“The others don’t have to win, but I just think that right throughout the football club, people have to play with a winning mentality.

“It doesn’t always mean you’re going to win, but the mentality is geared towards that.

“Knowing how to win a game is just as important as winning it, whether you’re in the youth team or first team, that’s good knowledge to have and it’s a skill that you acquire.”

One of the main things that Still has brought into the club is that whatever game his players are involved in, they approach it with the right attitude.

He added: “The games have got be played with the same intensity, the build up has to be same, preparation the same, so they get the best opportunity to show the ability they have to try and get into the team.

“Because if you do the development games as, get there when you like and it doesn’t matter, it’s not important, no that’s not right.

“It is important, it does matter. It’s very important we treat it that way and very important they know we treat it that way as the most important thing is that when it’s all over, they know they’ve been given the best opportunity to get back into the first team or into the first team.

“When you play these development games, it’s not the most important thing to win, the most important thing to do is get better.

“West Ham are always happy to play us, because our players play with a winning mentality and some development games are not played with a winning mentality, but they are here.

“If we don’t win, as long as we can see progress I’m happy, but we play with a winning mentality.”
