Still delighted with Town’s competition for places

Hatters boss John Still has praised the efforts of Town’s fringe players as they try to force their way into his first team plans, writes Mike Simmonds.

The development squad followed up an excellent win at West Ham last week by beating Northampton Town on Tuesday afternoon.

Still is well aware how vital is is that the first team players are kept on their toes as he said: “There are people who are trying so hard to get into the first team and that is key to what we do.

“We try and play every week and it’s been really good for one or two poeple who weren’t in the side who have forced their way in.

“If people are pushing so hard behind the main group you’ve got to try and find a way to give them that opportunity.

“Jim Stevenson, Matt Robinson and JJ O’Donnell have done particularly well in certain games and I have found them a way of pushing them by putting them on the bench and bringing them on just to give them an opportunity to feel part of it.

“But they have to warrant that. It’s not just a case of filling the bench, they have to warrant that and it can be difficult for players at times.”

One player who Still particularly felt for was striker Mark Cullen as after bagging four in two games, he then played in the 0-0 draw at Hereford before being back on the bench.

Still continued: “We got into a bit of goalscoring form and probably Mark Cullen might feel a bit disappointed that he’s not in the team at the moment, because he was hot.

“But Paul coming in and linking play so well, he’s done very well. Andre Gray started the season a bit slow, but gradually we’ve seen improvement and are finding the right combination of players.

“It’s tough for people who are not playing, but I’m pleased it’s tough. I don’t want it easy as that means we’re not doing our job well.

“But what’s more pleasing than that is how hard the people behind that are working.”
