The 26-year-old Frenchman played for Macclesfield last season, including against Hatters in a 1-1 draw, and has previously had spells at the likes of Auxerre and Pisa.

Although not the defender that Still is expecting will join today, on Audel, who is now a free agent, he said: “We haven’t really gone crazy on anything in that direction, that’s not to say that we won’t consider it though.”

Audel’s agent, Colin Brown, said his player was interesting a host of League clubs, including Port Vale, after a behind-closed-doors friendly against the Valiants last season.

Brown said: “They’re not the only ones who’d like to sign him.

“Crewe Alexandra have watched him two or three times and they are also interested, while we’ve had contact from Notts County and Luton Town too.”
