Still confident the foundations are being laid

Hatters boss John Still believes that the 0-0 draw at title-chasing Wrexham yesterday afternoon was further proof of the foundations he is trying to build at Kenilworth Road, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town looked far more solid at the back throughout the 90 minutes to earn a valiant clean sheet, their third in five games since the change of manager.

Speaking afterwards, Still said: “It was okay, I keep saying we’ve got to get the foundations right.

“The foundations are the organisation and discipline, that’s the key. Once we get that we can start adding.

“We’ve added a little bit, some games we’ve not had it, but it was there in abundance.

“That was very, very good, determined professional performance, not without goalscoring opportunities.

“It was probably a fair result if I’m honest for both teams, but I thought that was a decent performance from us.”

Still made five changes to the side that lost 2-1 at home to Hyde on Tuesday night, with Andre Gray dropping out of the squad, along with JJ O’Donnell, while Simon Ainge came in at right back.

Still continued: “Ronnie Henry was not well, Andre had a rest because I said before, I’m just going to tinker a little bit as I have to see everybody.

“I have to, before the end of the season, without trying to disrupt the team.

“That will continue between now and the end of the season. So when that comes, the magic question is who can play in a team to try and get out of this league? That’s what I have to find out.”

It had looked like substitute Dan Walker had stolen all three points for Luton in injury time when his shot was somehow kept out by the knees of Dragons goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.

Still was convinced the ball had gone in, but was also mindful of the bigger picture as he said: “I thought he’d scored. Someone was in front of me and it looked like it had gone between his legs.

“Winning is important of course it is, it’s always important. But you have to balance that to where I’m going to be at the end of the season in terms of assessing everybody.

“Sometimes by doing that you don’t give yourself the best chance to win, but long term, it’s the best thing to do.”
The boss was also quick to priase the 160 vocal Town fans who made the trip with little on the game for the visitors as he added: “Away from home against a team that’s going for promotion, and restricting them to very few chances, I think they would be happy with that.

“It’s great support and very, very noisy support as well, so I’m really, really pleased with that.”
