Still: Changes will benefit the ‘whole club’

Changes on and off the pitch are being planned by Hatters boss John Still, writes Mark Wood.

And he’s planning a key change that will benefit the ‘whole club’ in the near future.

Having developed a real reputation for developing young players during stints at Barnet and Dagenham & Redbridge he is hoping to help the Hatters’ long-standing reputation for doing the same.

Still said: “There’s going to be another change soon on the staff side which we haven’t had here before. That isn’t for now but that’s going to be implemented by the end of the season as well, which is going to be another major thing in the development of players here, because that’s important to me to develop players, really important.

“Going back to Barnet and the selling of people like Marlon King, Darren Currie who played here, Sam Stockley, we sold lots of players from there.

“The record at Dagenham for developing young players was phenomenal and goes into millions of pounds and that’s an important thing for me to find the players, but develop them.

“It’s not in the youth set-up it’s a club set-up, it will work for the whole club. But the development is crucial, it really is crucial.

“It can make the players better, it makes the team better. If the team’s better the team wins, when the team wins it gets success and out of that success players can move on, move higher or stay with the club and move higher and progress their careers which is really important.

“And getting the players into the team ethic is vital, but we need to develop players. Not bring players in and let them drift, we need to develop them physically, mentally, psychologically and technically.”

Players regularly play table tennis at their Ely Way training ground and Still was delighted to find it there, as they also has a table tennis table at previous club Daggers.

He continued: “It keeps them quick on their feet. That was here before I got here but I was really pleased because we had that at Dagenham a table tennis table.

“I think it’s really good for players. But we are changing lots and lots of things here.”

However, the hectic schedule until the end of the season means Still hasn’t been able to work with his players as often as he would like.

He added: “We’re Saturday/Tuesday, Saturday/Tuesday so when you finish a game you’re preparing for the next one.

“When you get free weeks you can really use Monday and Tuesday to be away from your next game and then Thursday and Friday for your next game.

“At the moment we can’t really do that, we’re always preparing for the next game.”
