Still building from the back after United stalemate

Town’s stalemate was their second in successive matches, but also means they have conceded just two goals in five games this campaign, one a massive deflection at Southport too.

Still said: “You want to win, always want to win, but we have to build it and I’ve built from the back.

“We have very good front players, I don’t think they’re playing that well, but unfortunately that happens.

“I thought Andre’s (Gray) game wasn’t good, but he worked hard and did his bit for the team.

“We need to keep working with those people, trying to get the three points but first thing we’ve got to do is keep working hard, the rest falls into place and I’ve been this solider before.

“I’m quite happy with what we did Saturday and what we did against Cambridge. We just need to keep working on final third stuff. It’s weird because pre-season we were rattling the goals in and we weren’t conceding goals, but we’re still not conceding goals.

“But from that first day of the season where I don’t think we worked hard enough, we’ve now got that in our game. Our organisation is very good, we need to be a bit more productive in the final third and have a bit more end product.”

Hatters were left with only one fully fit striker on the pitch at the end in Andre Gray as Town’s injury problems upfront increased.

Loan signing Paul Benson wasn’t included due to a lack of match fitness, while Jon Shaw hobbled off at half time, and Still confirmed Mark Cullen was also taken off due to a slight knock.

The boss continued: “We’re a little bit short forward wise at the moment. Jon’s not quite right, Mark Cullen’s better but not quite right.

“Alex Wall is not ready, so there was a little bit of a problem down the middle.”

On the injuries to both of his strikers, Still added: “He (Cullen) was touch and go before, and if I was going to play him, he needed to play a little bit off of the striker.

“But I thought his movement was very, very restricted. I put him out wide a little bit because he’s very clever with the ball, but when you keep playing with people who have knocks it’s not right. I’d sooner be properly fit and he probably just wasn’t right.

“If Jon had a little bit of extra sharpness, there were a couple of balls just getting past him as his movement was restricted.

“He’s done fantastic for us, but it’s not fair on him to keep starting him and taking him off.

“We need that focal point of our play though. Jon’s played on two or three games, terrific, but obviously we can’t keep doing that, we had to find some way of doing something, so hopefully Paul will help us out.”
