Still accepts responsibility for Heed hammering

Town boss John Still took responsibility for Town’s dire 5-1 defeat at Gateshead on Saturday despite being absent on a scouting mission, writes Mike Simmonds.

Hatters goalkeeper Dean Brill was left exposed time and time again as the hosts cut through Luton’s defence seemingly at will, and Still, who watched the DVD back last night, said: “Most of the goals from what I’ve seen and how I’ve seen it are from midfield players not tracking people, not getting close to people and them getting the run on defenders.

“It was disappointing to lose in the manner that we lost, so there is a responsibility there, but as always, the responsibility is with the manager.

“The manager picks the team, team didn’t do very well.

“We’re a lot more competitive than that, but we weren’t. I’m the manager, I picked picked a team I felt could have competed on Saturday.

“Listening to Terry (Harris) and Neils (Alan Neilson), we were very disappointing.

Disappointment is the right word, in the display, disappointment of the performance, the competitiveness of the players as well. They are two important areas.”

Assistant boss Terry Harris led the players to the 126 away fans after the final whistle and Still thought it was right that they showed their appreciations.

He added: “When supporters travel a long way, it’s not cheap. I have to understand and players understand that classes them to me as proper supporters. I’m not saying the others aren’t proper supporters, but the ones that have gone are diehard Luton Town supporters, so why shouldn’t players go over and apologise for their performances.

“Because if we’d have won 5-1, they’d be over there wanting to take the plaudits, that’s the name of the game.

“But what’s gone has gone and that’s not going to change. It’s like falling off a horse, the longer you leave it before getting back on, the harder it is.

“We’ve got to get back on the horse and go again. If someone had said to me are we capable of going there and beating beaten like that, my honest answer would have been no and that’s why we apologised after the long journey the supporters made.”
