Stevenson enjoys winning return at Histon

Town midfielder Jim Stevenson enjoyed a winning return to his former club Histon on Thursday night as a late goal from Zane Banton saw Hatters triumph 1-0, writes Mike Simmonds.

The summer signing joined Kenilworth Road from the Stutes along with full back Danny Fitzsimons as the pair were both given a warm reception by the home supporters.

Despite the result, Hatters never quite got going against their Conference North opponents and Stevenson admitted it had been a frustrating evening.

He said: “It was nice to be back at the Glass World, see some familiar faces. It was a bit of a scrappy game, we were quite disappointed with how we played, not as good as Tuesday night (against Maidstone).

“But those nights sometimes happen and you’ve got to get through them. Make sure you react well and get back on it again when you’re disappointed with how you played.

“You want to play as well as you can but football you to play win. We did that Tuesday and we’ve done that again and long may that continue, winning football games is always fun.”

Having been a regular for the Stutes last campaign, Stevenson was well aware just how they would approach the clash, and wasn’t surprised to see the hosts raise their game.

He continued: “They would have been well up for that, it is one of the biggest teams they’ve played. Some of the lads are good mates and said they were up for it, you could see a spring in their step.

“We knew they would be so we should have matched that, and were disappointed with how we played overall.”

Despite being well known to the Histon players, along with Fitzsimons who made his first appearance in a Luton shirt after recovering from injury, Stevenson didn’t get any good natured stick from his former team-mates once the whistle had gone.

He said: “There wasn’t really, not during the game. I spoke to a few of the lads before, but once it was game time we were switched on.”

Stevenson had to come off in the closing stages as a precaution, but is confident he’ll be ready for the test against Arsenal this afternoon and Thurrock on Monday night, before the action gets serious at Southport for the season opener on August 10.

He added: “I felt my groin, it’s been a tough week training wise and I felt a little bit of a niggle.

“Now’s not the time of year you want to be pickng up a muscular tear, so I told Hakan (Hayrettin) and he took me off. I should be okay and good again to go on Saturday.

“We’ve got a big squad, so he’s (John Still) been rotating it all pre-season. I don’t know who will be playing the games, if I get called upon, I get called upon and I’ll give 100 per cent and try to get myself in the team for the 10th.”
