Spiller’s time at Town could be up

Injured Town midfielder Danny Spiller’s days at Kenilworth Road look to be numbered with the Hatters set to discuss his future when he returns from holiday, writes Mark Wood.

The 31-year-old was signed from Gillingham but hasn’t played a single competitive game for Luton, after two aborted comebacks in development games.

Managing director Gary Sweet said: “Danny Spiller is on holiday and when he gets back we will sort it out. We’ve got a meeting.”

Spiller’s stay with the Town has been blighted by an achilles injury picked up last pre-season and figured only briefly in friendlies last season against former club Gillingham and Championship side Charlton Athletic.

Meanwhile, ankle problems have plagued fellow Gills signing Garry Richards.

The 27-year-old centre-half is also yet to appear for the Hatters after suffering an impact injury last summer and has undergone two operations to help cure the problem.

But Sweet believes the club have a ‘duty of care’ to him, saying: “The thing with some players is if they have an impact injury while they are in our employment, we have a duty of care to look after them.

“We’ve got to do that. It’s an occupational hazard as such.

“Every football club has one or two injured players and Garry Richards is one of them and hasn’t had any luck at all.”
