Sparkling praise for Town’s dynamic duo

Hatters midfielder Luke Guttridge heaped praise on Town’s front pairing Paul Benson and Andre Gray as they ran riot against Alfreton, writes Mike Simmonds.

Gray notched his 11th and 12 goals of the season at the weekend, while Benson netted his seventh for Town in Luton’s first half annihilation.

Guttridge, who himself has notched seven times this term, said: “I’ve known Benno for a long time, since I was at Southend, I’ve played with him and kept in touch.

“He’s easy to play with, you can talk to him, ask him to hold it, he’ll hold it, as some people just play naturally.

“Andre, I don’t think people give him the credit (he deserves).

“People say he’s quick and powerful, but he has actually got a great work ethic and his runs are very good.

“He can probably get in a lot more with better balls too.”

On-loan Brentford defender Alfie Mawson was also highly impressed with his first viewing of the dynamic duo as he said: “All you’ve got to do is get it up to them, they were fantastic and scored every chance.

“To be 4-0 up in 20-25 minutes was fantastic, especially coming away to a side like Alfreton who I’ve been hearing have been doing really well at home.”

Striker Benson has been a major part of Gray’s improvement this season.

Before the forward joined on loan from Swindon, Gray had yet to open his account, but now has 12 in the last 12 league matches.

Benson said: “Andre in particular is doing very well, but we’re not just relying on Andre, goals are coming from everywhere.

“You’ve got to give him credit though, he’s really on top of his game.”

Boss John Still believes his front two are now flourishing as a partnership, as was shown against the shell-shocked Reds on Saturday.

He added: “The understanding between the front two is first class.

“Paul has come in and been a massive help to Andre, the two of them work perfectly well together.

“It’s all right having decent front men, but it’s having pairs, combinations and I think we do have a good combination there.

“The quality of the goals was the pleasing thing as the movement from our front two was outstanding and Luke (Guttridge) linking up with the front two.”
