The 27-year-old suffered a double leg break during Town’s 2-1 Boxing Day victory at Barnet.

On hearing the severity of his injury, some Town fans clubbed together to buy Smith a gift, while he has been inundated with good wishes too.

Speaking exclusively to the News/Gazette, he said: “To have that amount of support has been fantastic. It’s a real boost to me and gives me that real push to get back and come back even stronger.

“The fans have been amazing to me, messages have been unreal and I’ll never forget that.

“I can’t describe how proud I am to get that sort of support.”

Since he’s been out of the team, Smith has seen the likes of Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu and Cameron McGeehan rise to the fore and knows he faces a real fight for his place when fit again.

Whether that is this campaign though remains unlikely as Smith is aiming to be back and raring to go for a pre-season he hopes is in League Two.
