The 26-year-old has barely missed a game in the last four years and is hoping that some well-deserved R&R will help him to power Town’s title charge next season after a disappointing campaign.

He said: “I think it’s probably about four or five seasons in a row now where I haven’t missed a game, playing every game, no injuries or suspensions.

“A rest will probably do me good, but then towards the end of the break I will get my end set for the season.”

Town may have missed out on a play-off place for the first time in four years, but for Smith, the end of season has been important to grasp how new boss John Still wants them to play.

He said: “I think to learn to play as a team and show the manager what you can do.

“He’s saying, prove your worth to the club. He wants everyone to prove they’re good enough to win this league. I’m massively disappointed we’re not in the shake-up,

I wish I was going for the play-offs now, but that’s life. I need to come back next season as strong as we can and hopefully the gaffer wants me here.”

While he is yet to talk about his future with Still, Smith is desperate to remain at Kenilworth Road.

He added: “Not personally, we haven’t had the talk, I’m just working as hard as I can to prove what I can do. I’ve been disappointing a couple of games which is frustrating, so I’m just trying to prove my worth to this club.

“I’m finding it good, I’m just happy to play for such a big club. To be turning out in front of fans like that it’s what everyone wants to do.”
