Smith shocked by the one-sided nature of Town’s reverse

Smith, who has arrived at Kenilworth Road on loan from League Two York City, was handed an immediate debut and impressed alongside Arnaud Mendy in the centre of Town’s midfield.

He said: “I don’t think I’ve played in a game as one-sided as that before. It was just constant pressure from ourselves and we were unlucky we just couldn’t get the breakthrough.

“One shot (for Hereford), bang and then they have five or six guys on the line blocking. With the keeper and the blocks it was unbelievable as I’ve come off thinking how have we lost that game?

“I’m shocked to come off losing, I don’t like losing as well. It just wasn’t our night, but if we keep going like that, with that team spirit, we’ll be all right.”

Although naturally gutted with the result, Smith didn’t feel the need to panic as playing against a side set up as defensively as Hereford was something he experienced while part of Swindon Town’s League Two winning team last term.

He continued: “I’d be worried if we weren’t creating chances, but we created enough to win that game.

“We just need to be a bit more ruthless. I’ve had games like that before, last year with Swindon, a lot of teams were sitting behind the ball, so as long as we keep showing that belief we’ll be fine.”

Smith only met up with his new team-mates a few hours before kick-off, but looked like he will be an excellent addition to the side as he fitted in seamlessly.

He said: “All the lads are really good and helped me through the game. I haven’t played for a few weeks so my fitness wasn’t top, but that 90 minutes will help me a lot.

“The manager believed in me and just said, go out and play your own game.

“I got to know the lads pretty quickly and thoroughly enjoyed it. I know we lost, but it felt really good being out there and I can’t wait for the next game.”

Smith’s next taste of action will be when Dartford visit Kenilworth Road at the weekend, a ground he was red carded at on his last appearance, when a York City player.

He added: “I’m honestly can’t wait for Saturday. Even though we’ve lost, I think we’ve got to take some positives.

“Everyone’s disappointed, but if we keep with that commitment, we’ll give a team a hammering soon as I was very impressed.”
