He said: “I’m just trying to take his instructions on board and trying to do what he wants me to do while giving my best for the club as well.

“I think I’m just focusing on trying to learn what the new gaffer wants us to do. I’m desperate to do well for this club and I’m working as hard as I can to do that.”

Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Hereford on Saturday, he said: “I enjoy playing in front of this crowd, I’m just disappointed we couldn’t be further up the league, but I’ll just keep doing my best for the team.

“I’m desperate to win. The feeling when you win is a different feeling so I want that every week.”

On the changes that have happened under new boss John Still, Smith added: “He has changed a few things tactically. He’s adamant about the way he wants to play which is good, so everyone knows their job.

“There’s no excuses, you go out there and you know what your job is and if you do your job and everyone does their jobs you get the win, so you know what he expects from you.”
