With Solomon Taiwo missing Saturday’s game at title favourites Forest Green Rovers with an hamstring problem, the 26-year-old put in a custom energetic and wholehearted performance back in his preferred central midfield position, have filled in for the sideline Ronnie Henry at right-back earlier in the season.

And he admitted that all the players have already turned their attention to being fit for the visit of the U’s on Monday, who beat Lincoln City 1-0 at home at the weekend and have won three and draw one of their opening four fixtures.

Smith said: “It’s going to be about recovering now for Monday, obviously depending if the gaffer selects me I’ll just prepare and get ready for that one.”

It marks a return to Kenilworth Road for former manager Richard Money as well as for former players Greg Taylor and the recently-signed Michael Spillane.

And it continues a run of five incredible difficult fixtures that started with Saturday’s trip to FGR and continues with games against all of last season’s disappointed play-off teams.

But Smith is undaunted, saying: “I think we’re one of the top sides to be honest. I think if we play as we are (capable of) we can beat anyone. As proved today we’re coming away a little bit disappointed with a draw so I don’t think it matters who we play as long as we go out and play them in order then we’re not to fear anyone whoever comes.”

Smith’s also looking to hold on to his place and can’t wait to run out at Kenilworth Road once again.

He added: “The fans have been excellent. And I personally enjoy playing at home over the away games so I look forward to playing in that one.”
