Slipping into Town’s rejigged defence was no problem for experienced centre-half Anthony Charles on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.

The 32-year-old is now fully fit after a shoulder injury sidelined him for almost two months, and helped the Hatters to keep a clean sheet as they progressed against Woking at the weekend.

There were a total of six changes to the team, with keeper Elliot Justham being handed his debut in goal, while Jake Howells was a late replacement for Scott Griffiths at left-back.

But Charles slipped in seamlessly, as he said: “You get an understanding, a relationship with the boys because you train with them, and that relationship pretty much builds over pre-season.

“So it’s not like you need to worry about anything. It’s just finding your timing and I picked up a booking, maybe because I was a little bit off the pace in the first half, but as you build on your games and the minutes you become more comfortable, your sharpness is there and you’re already waiting for the danger.

“For me the 90 minutes are important, but not as important as probably the result.”
