Shaw wants to prove his worth at Town

Striker Jon Shaw is yet to have a chat with new boss John Still over his future – but is hopeful he will remain at Kenilworth Road next season, writes Mark Wood.

The marquee summer signing has struggled with injuries and form this term, but netted his 10th goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Cambridge United.

On whether he will stay, Shaw said: “That’s the hope.

“We haven’t had a chat or anything yet about next season, and obviously I’ve got a contract for it. If he wants me here he sounds like he plays my type of football.

“’m sure with the quality of Dave (Martin), Jake (Howells) and maybe he’ll probably bring in a couple more, because that’s what he likes to do, having wingers and competition.

“It’ll be interesting and hopefully I’ll be a part of that.”

Having netted over 30 goals for Gateshead last season, Shaw hasn’t been able to replicate that kind of form this time around.

“We’ve rotated the team quite a lot. Not just myself, a lot of players, positions and you kind of strike up partnerships,” said Shaw.

“When I was at Gateshead we had me and Martin Brittain the right winger. It was weird, you just know where the ball’s going to go. It’s not really clicked like that here.

“We’ve played forwards as wide men, we’ve played wide men as wide men, we’ve played wingers on the opposite sides. I haven’t really clicked with somebody specifically.

“It takes time and unfortunately this season’s been frustrating from back to front for us and off the pitch as well and everyone can see it’s a bit of a transitional period for everybody.

“A lot of players have left, a lot have come in, a new manager now and it’s going to be interesting next season, but I’m hoping that after a good pre-season, which I didn’t get this year, I’ll have a good run at it.”

Shaw is purely concentrating on showing new boss John Still what he has to offer.

He added: “You have to work as hard as you possibly can when the manager comes through the door which I’ve tried to do the last few weeks to show him what you’re about.

“Again I’m a little bit older and I’ve been around this league a long time so I think he pretty much knows what I’m about.

“But I’d love to stay, I’ve got another year’s contract as I’ve said. It is a big club and next year’s going to be interesting.

“I know it gets said at the start of every season but you want to be a part of it and I don’t believe leaving here I’ll get another chance like I’m going to get next year. So I would love to stay and I’m just going to wait and see what he says.

“I came here hoping to play 40-50 games and score 20-30 goals. Last season it wasn’t a fluke, I’ve done it before, I’ve scored 20-odd goals on three occasions.

“So I came here with high hopes myself and was a little bit disrupted by injuries as well as loss of form and formations where I’ve been moved around a little bit more than I’d have liked.”
