Shaw: I’m fit for Kidderminster trip

TOWN striker Jon Shaw has declared himself fully fit for tonight’s Blue Square Bet Premier trip to Kidderminster Harriers, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 28-year-old could only make the bench for Saturday’s opening game against former club Gateshead despite recovering from a calf injury suffered during pre-season.

Introduced at half time with his new side trailing 2-0, he showed just why he was such a hotly anticipated signing, by scoring the first as Town recovered to earn a point.

In manager Paul Buckle’s press conference, he said if Shaw was fit, he would start and when asked if he was ready, the forward said: “I think so. I’ve done pretty much all the pre-season and just missed the week where we had four games which made it seem like longer.

“I’ve done all the training, now I’ve come through three lots of 45 minutes in a week and a half, so I feel like I’m ready to go.”

Although Town were booed off at the break on Saturday, after a poor first half display, Shaw wasn’t unduly worried about their chances for the season ahead with just the one game one.

He said: “Basically, we look at it as we had a half an hour wobble and that’s it. It’s the first game of the season, we came back in the second half, we’ve shown some character, shown what we’re about.

“The feeling in the camp is we’re a small, tight unit and we want success.

“Now it’s about moving that into Tuesday and carrying on.”

Town and Harrier were in direct competition for the final play-off spot last season, with Hatters just about pipping tonight’s opponents and Shaw has always been impressed with the Aggborough side.

He continued: “Kiddie are a good team, they’ve got a great manager in Steve Burr and I’ve always had a lot of respect for him, the way he likes to play and the way that the lads play for him.

“It’s always a tough place to go, never an easy ride when I’ve been there. I’ve had a few good and a few bad results, I’ve scored a couple there, but also been there when we’ve had a good hiding.

“They’ve always played good football and been a good side, but I can see it being a tough game.”

Shaw would be happy with a repeat of his last trip there as for Gateshead on the opening day, he netted a fourth minute penalty in a 3-2 victory.

He said: “This time last year I went there on the first day of the season and opened my account there and we won, so hopefully it that’s anything to go by it will be a good day for us.”

After tasting the Kenilworth Road atmosphere as a Town player for the first time at the weekend, Shaw is now looking forward to the excellent away following Luton have, with around 1,000 expected to make tonight’s journey.

He added: “With the fanbase the size of ours, we’re happy they’ll come to the away game and if we can just go and put on a good performance for them, then hopefully we’ll come away with the result.”
