Shaw believes FA Trophy has come at the right time for Hatters

Hatters striker Jon Shaw believes the FA Trophy tie at Matlock Town on Saturday has come at exactly the right time for Luton, writes Mike Simmonds.

Town were hammered 5-2 by Newport County in their last Blue Square Bet Premier match on Tuesday night, so Shaw is well aware that the players need to put the hours in on the training ground.

He said: “I think it’s good that we’ve got a little bit of a break from the league.

“A result like that shows you’ve got to get back on the training ground and work on aspects of your game.”

“I think the last goal (against Newport) looked soft, but I don’t know if people are trying to get their feet and they can’t or slipping on the bakk.

“The conditions weren’t the best, but both teams have to deal with it and we dealt with it poorly.”

Shaw, who scored Town’s second goal on the night, believes he is starting to get back to some kind of form now too after finally returning to full fitness from over a month out with a thigh injury.

He continued: “I had the game against Dorchester, 45 minutes against Newport and it’s time for me to start getting more minutes under my belt as its been a long five weeks.

“Certain people are not too fused about the Trophy, but I’ve got an opportunity to go and win it with a great bunch of lads.”

Midfielder JJ O’Donnell had no qualms about a second round Trophy fixture instead of another Blue Square Bet Premier game too, adding: “It’s a game of football, we don’t set fixture schedules, we’ll go out and try and win that one.

“The final is at Wembley, so we want to go and win that, we want to win every game of football.

“There’s no point going out and saying, not today lads, we’ll sack this one off.

“We’re taking it game by game, whoever we play, whever we play, want to win games of football.”
